Three Piece Suit

A three piece suit gives you a jacket, trouser and waistcoat cut to work together, so the line stays cleaner through the chest, waist and back. At Fits Smart Tailoring, each suit is measured for your frame and your way of dressing, whether you fit in our Rosebank studio or through our online process.

What a three piece suit includes

A proper three piece suit is built from three matching parts: jacket, trousers and waistcoat. The waistcoat adds shape through the middle, which is useful if you want the suit to hold its form when the jacket comes off at a wedding, dinner, or long day of meetings. It also gives a more polished line under the jacket, especially for men who prefer a neater front and a closer fit around the body.

We cut each piece to your measurements rather than working from a standard size. That matters when shoulders, chest and seat are not all the same proportions, which is most people. The jacket can be shaped with a softer business feel or a more formal waist, while the waistcoat can be made with a lower front, higher front, or a slightly longer back depending on how you like it to sit.

  • Jacket, trouser and waistcoat matched as one suit
  • Made to your body measurements and posture
  • Suitable for formal wear, business wear and events
  • Can be worn as a full suit or as separates

Fit, sizes and style options

We do not sell the suit as a fixed size off the rail. Instead, we work from your measurements and fitting notes so the jacket length, trouser rise, waistcoat depth and sleeve balance suit your build. If you have broad shoulders, a fuller midsection, a longer torso or a shorter leg line, those details are adjusted before the suit is cut. That saves time on alterations later and gives a much cleaner finish.

Style options are kept practical. You can choose a single-breasted or double-breasted look, lapel width, pocket style, button count, lining options and trouser finish. The waistcoat can be made with or without a back adjuster, and we can shape it so it sits neat under a jacket for office wear or a more formal event. If you are after a wedding suit, we also help with fabric tone so the whole party reads well in photos.

  • Suitable for slim, regular and fuller body shapes
  • Jacket sizes are based on your measurements, not S to XXL labels
  • Waistcoat can be cut high, mid or low depending on the occasion
  • Custom trouser break and hem finish available

Where the three piece suit works best

This suit suits occasions where you need presence without looking overdressed for the room. In Johannesburg and Sandton, it works well for board meetings, client presentations and formal evenings. In Pretoria, it is a strong choice for church events, graduations and black tie functions where a waistcoat helps the suit stay neat. For Durban and Cape Town, lighter cloth choices are often better because of the humidity and summer heat, while still keeping the same tailored structure.

It also works well for wedding parties, groomsmen, and milestone birthdays where the dress code needs to hold together across the day. A three piece suit can be dressed up with a tie and pocket square, or worn more simply with the collar open. That makes it useful for travel too, since you can strip the waistcoat off later and still have a proper two piece look. It is one of those items that still feels appropriate years after the first wear.

Fitting process and what we need from you

There is no power or gas requirement for the suit itself. What matters is the fitting information and the way you plan to wear the suit. You can visit our Rosebank studio for a live fitting, or use our online fitting process if you are in Pretoria, Midrand, Randburg, Durban, Cape Town or elsewhere in South Africa. We guide you through posture, shoulder slope, chest, waist, seat, sleeve length and trouser measurement, then we confirm style details before cutting begins.

It helps to wear the shoes and shirt you expect to use with the suit, especially for trouser length and jacket balance. If the suit is for a wedding or corporate group, bring the event date and note any colour rules or dress instructions. If you want the waistcoat worn with or without the jacket, say so early because that changes how we set the front opening and fit through the body. Small details make a big differnce once the suit is worn all day.

  • Have your event date ready before ordering
  • Wear the shoes you plan to pair with the suit
  • Tell us if you want a classic, slim or roomier finish
  • Share any dress code, colour rule or group order requirement

Fabric choice, care and servicing

The fabric you choose affects comfort, crease resistance and how often the suit needs pressing. For Gauteng winters, a midweight cloth usually works well. For coastal use, lighter cloth is often more comfortable and breathes better in humidity. Dark navy, charcoal and black remain the most practical for business and formal events, while softer greys and textured weaves work if you want something less rigid.

Care is simple but it needs discipline. Hang the jacket on a broad hanger, let the suit air after wearing, and avoid packing it damp after travel. Press only when needed, and use a tailor or dry cleaner that knows how to handle structured suiting. Waistcoats should not be pulled at the back strap every time you wear them, because that can distort the line. If your shape changes later, we can assess whether the suit needs alteration refinement rather than a full remake.

  • Best stored on wide hangers in a cool dry cupboard
  • Avoid over-cleaning and harsh pressing
  • Let the cloth rest between wears
  • Minor body changes can often be adjusted after purchase

What to confirm before ordering your formal suit

Before you order, check the event type, date, dress code and how often you expect to wear the suit. A wedding suit may need a bolder lining or a sharper waistcoat finish, while a work suit usually needs a cleaner, quieter look. Check whether you want the waistcoat to sit lower for formal wear or higher for a more conservative style. Also think about whether you will wear the jacket buttoned most of the time or prefer a more relaxed fit through the middle.

You should also confirm your preferred fabric weight, colour, button finish and whether you want trouser cuffs or a plain hem. If you travel often, ask for a cloth that creases less and pack it properly in a suit bag. For repeat orders, we keep your fit notes on file, which makes it easier to order another suit later with the same line and fewer adjustments. That is useful for groomsmen, executives and anyone who likes a dependable fit.

  • Confirm event date, venue and dress code before the cut starts
  • Choose your fabric weight based on season and city climate
  • Decide how formal you want the waistcoat to sit
  • Check trouser rise, hem finish and jacket stance

Questions we get asked

Is a three piece suit too formal for everyday wear?

Not necessarily. If you choose a quieter cloth and a simple waistcoat, it can work for business, meetings and formal day wear. The jacket and waistcoat can also be worn separately with other items.

Can I order from outside Johannesburg?

Yes. We fit customers across South Africa through our online process and courier delivery, including Sandton, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. You can also book a studio fitting in Rosebank if you are nearby.

What should I bring to the fitting?

Bring your usual shirt and shoes if you have them, plus your event date and any dress code details. If you want the suit for a wedding or corporate group, share that early so we can plan the fit and finish properly.
